theScore Bet, the betting app from theScore sports news site, wins points for a stylish and intuitive mobile app that even beginners will have no trouble navigating. But the sportsbook falls short in terms of variety of bets, live bets and bonuses. The biggest whiff of all: a huge missed opportunity to really integrate the trove of sports information offered by its outstanding parent app.

Top Takeaways for 2021

After testing 20 online sportsbooks for our 2021 review, here are our top findings on theScore Bet:

  • theScore Bet mobile app is built on usability, allowing users to find games and add bets to the bet slip quickly. Plus, there are some unique cross-app integration features between theScore Bet and theScore media app.
  • Missing from theScore Bet sportsbook are unique bets and contests. Plus, the broad variety of live bets and bonuses are average at best.
  • The goldmine of information available for previewing games in theScore media app is mostly absent from theScore Bet. This forces users to switch back and forth between the two apps.

Sports and Bets Offered

theScore Bet delivers an average-at-best selection of bets and sports. Twelve different sports are available to throw down on (including all standard sports, except for bull riding), with about five to 20 prop bets listed for most games. Bettors should also know that theScore Bet is one of the only sports betting sites without daily odds boosts.

Bet variety: theScore Bet has all the basic bet types — moneyline, spread, total, props. What’s not on the menu are unique bets (e.g., “How many points + rebounds + assists will Stephen Curry score?” or “What team will score 20 points first?”). For comparison: theScore Bet offers 30 to 40 bets for NFL games, while top sportsbooks like FanDuel and DraftKings provide more than 100 bets, including more team and player props, alternative spreads, and alternative totals.

Cash out feature: Like most sportsbooks, theScore Bet offers a cash out feature. This allows bettors to amend their original bet and lock in a profit or a loss by settling the bet (or a portion of the bet) before the event has concluded.

Daily odds boosts: theScore Bet offers no odds boosts, which leaves a large void in its betting menu. Odds boosts are like getting a free gift with purchase at a retail store. For example, when a sportsbook boosts the odds of LeBron James scoring 30 points from +110 to +150, you’ll win $1.50 instead of $1.10 for every $1 wagered.

Odds

As shown in the table below, theScore Bet offers excellent odds for NFL moneyline bets, NHL moneyline bets, NHL moneyline bets, NCAAB moneyline odds, and NCAAF moneyline odds. For comparison, if average moneyline odds on a team are +130 at other sports betting sites, theScore Bet might offer odds at +140. In this example, every dollar wagered would return $1.40 at theScore Bet versus $1.30 at other sites.

Methodology: To score Odds, Moneyline.com gathers data from 21 sportsbooks over several months. For our 2020 Sportsbook Review, over 10,000 data points were collected for spread, moneyline, and over/under (bets).

I collected odds for spread, moneyline, and total bets for over 75 NFL games, 75 MLB games, 75 NBA games, 75 NHL games, 75 Soccer games (various leagues), and 75 NCAA Football and 75 NCAA Basketball games. When collecting odds, I collected the same games simultaneously for each sportsbook, ensuring data accuracy.

Live Betting

Score

The live betting setup at theScore Bet is frankly primitive compared to most sportsbooks I’ve tested. While you can live bet moneyline, spread, and total bets, there are few other real-time options, which puts a damper on the excitement.

Instant bets: The ability to bet on the next play of a game or the next point in a match — aka an instant bet — is nonexistent at theScore Bet. It’s a notable absence to be unable to wager on the next drive of an NFL game or the next point of a tennis match. Although I’ve typically stuck to more traditional live bets in the past, I’ve been drawn to new types of live bets the more I see them. If you find yourself in a similar situation, I recommend checking out FanDuel or SportsBetting.com.

Prop bets: Few in-play prop bets are available at theScore Bet. An example of a prop bet is, “How many touchdowns will Patrick Mahomes throw?”

Live match tracker: You won’t find a live match tracker — an animated graphic that displays which team is attacking — in theScore Bet’s live betting menu, even though it’s standard at most other sportsbooks. However, I was still glad to see live down and distance markers for NFL games. It is essential to have either the live down and distance or a match tracker available in a sports betting app. It allows you to compare what you see in the app versus to what you see on TV, as TV broadcasts are often delayed by 10 to 20 seconds.

Live Streaming: theScore Bet does not stream live sporting events through its app. If you’re interested in this feature, check out FanDuel or Unibet. Be aware that for all sportsbooks, live streaming is currently limited to international sports such as basketball, soccer, hockey, tennis and table tennis matches due to the high costs of licensing live broadcasting rights.

theScore Bet Mobile App

theScore Bet app is user-friendly and functions similarly to theScore media app. I had no problems placing bets or navigating between sports. Some elements of the popular theScore media app are incorporated into theScore Bet app. Still, the integration falls frustratingly short.

If you’re unfamiliar with theScore media app, it competes with ESPN to offer game previews, scores, and general news. When I first heard theScore was making a betting app, I was excited at the prospect of a betting app that would function like theScore or ESPN. Unfortunately, most of theScore media app’s great features are MIA on the betting app.

Cross-app integration pros: Bets you place in theScore Bet sportsbook can be tracked in theScore media app. Teams you highlight as favorites in the media app will automatically be highlighted in theScore Bet app. Real-time scoring and live odds movements align with your live matchup experience between both apps, allowing you to track teams and bets easily. You can also view and add bets in theScore media app to your bet slip in theScore Bet app, but you still have to login to theScore Bet to place wagers.

Cross-app integration cons: theScore Bet mobile app offers better game previews than most sportsbooks, including what stadium the game will be played at and full injury reports. While an improvement over most sportsbooks, it’s a disappointment not to find more of the preview features that are available in theScore media app: team and player stats, social media feeds, news articles, community game chat, and betting info that includes line movement. Toggling back and forth between the two apps for the full experience gets old.

Education

A sports betting glossary is available that does an exceptional job of going over common betting terms and gives quick examples of each bet type. While the glossary is of high-quality, there is room for additional content. For example, I’d like to see examples of popular bet types with screenshots from theScore Bet, or video content.

Bonuses & Promotions

As of February 2021, theScore Bet offered no ongoing promotions for existing customers. (Other sportsbooks routinely offer current customers several new promotions each week.) New customers, however, could choose from two promotions at the time this review was written — a risk-free bet up to $500 (an average offering) and a first deposit match with an extremely high rollover requirement (I’ve seen better). All in all, I was left unimpressed with theScore Bet’s promotions.

New customers: theScore Bet offers two types of promotions for new customers. The first is a 100% first deposit match up to $1,000. Unfortunately, this bonus has a 10X rollover which makes it much harder to unlock the bonus money. Users also earn 5% cashback on bets as part of this bonus, regardless of the game's outcome. You only have only 60 days to reach all of your free money or lose what is left over. So, for example, if you deposit $100, you’ll have to wager $2,000 in the next 60 days to get your free $100.

The second promotion for new customers is a risk-free bet up to $500. Unlike the $1,000 deposit match bonus, there aren’t any extreme rollover requirements attached. That said, there are better options out there — for example, you can get a $1,000 risk-free bet and access to ongoing promotions at FanDuel and PointsBet.

Final Thoughts

When I think about theScore Bet I fantasize about what could have been. theScore media app is so damn good it competes with ESPN — ESPN! — as the go-to app for checking sports scores, game previews, and betting lines. Unfortunately, theScore Bet sportsbook is missing too many of the useful features that have hooked millions of users to theScore media app since it launched in 2007. This disconnect, plus theScore Bet’s too-basic selection of bets, live betting, and bonuses, makes for a somewhat disappointing sportsbook spinoff.

Methodology

For the BettingBuck.com annual best online sportsbooks review published in 2020, a total of 2,300 data points were collected over six months and used to score sportsbooks. Additionally, odds data was collected for each sportsbook on over 1,400 bets to give each sportsbook a comparative odds ranking.
